BHL Guide: Who Should Apply & How
Who is this job for?
A two-year postdoc job in Europe at Uppsala University's Department of Pharmacy for a molecular biologist who wants to design and produce AAV vectors for Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases, and test them in vitro and in animals. The post starts on 1 February 2027 or as agreed.
Eligibility at a glance
- PhD in molecular biology, biotechnology, gene therapy, neuroscience or a related field
- Lab experience in molecular biology, gene therapy or biologics
- Willingness to work with animal experiments
- Priority to degrees from the last three years; AAV design, production and ÄKTA purification are strong merits
How to apply
- Apply online through Uppsala University's official Varbi system (reference UFV-PA 2026/3107)
- There is no cover letter — you answer application questions instead, so prepare clear, specific answers
- Last date: 16 November 2026 (written in listing)
Tips for applicants from India
- Mention cloning, protein purification, ELISA or FACS work from your PhD — the listing names these as merits
- Teaching experience also counts, so add any lab-course or tutoring work

Job Description
The Department of Pharmacy at Uppsala University has an interdisciplinary environment at the center of the pharmaceutical arena. With frontline research, first-rate education and extensive collaborations we constitute a driving force in the development of our academic field. In this inspiring environment our rich diversity of research groups, several of international prominence, develop and conduct work of great scientific importance. Among our core competencies are computational modelling and simulations, PKPD, in vitro ADME models, advanced in vivo methods, biological medicines, as well as patient and societal aspects, from optimising the use of drugs in individuals to societal pharmaceutical policies. Together, we form a unique cluster of academic competencies within pharmaceutical science, playing a key role in shaping the future of pharmacy in both Sweden and globally.
Our scientific focus areas include:
Pharmacokinetics & Pharmacodynamics • Pharmacometrics • Clinical Pharmacy • Advanced Drug Delivery • Molecular Pharmaceutics • Biological Drugs • Pharmacoepidemiology • Social Pharmacy
The position is focused on the development of AAV-based therapies for Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. The work will involve the design, production, and characterization of AAV vectors, as well as the evaluation of therapeutic strategies in vitro and in vivo.
The research group develops biologic therapies for neurodegenerative diseases, primarily Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. We work with several therapeutic modalities, including protein- and antibody-based drugs as well as AAV-based gene therapy.
The exact duties may be adapted to some extent based on the candidate’s skills and experience; however, the design and production of biopharmaceuticals and in vivo experiments will be central components of the position. Some teaching and administrative duties may also be included.
Qualifications
- We are seeking a candidate with a PhD in a field relevant to the position, such as molecular biology, biotechnology, gene therapy, neuroscience, or a related discipline. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Priority will be given to applicants who have completed their degree no more than three years before the deadline for applications. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.
- Applicants must have experience in experimental work within molecular biology, gene therapy, biologics, or a related field.
- As in vivo studies constitute an important part of the projects, candidates must be willing to work with animal experiments.
Skills Required
- Particularly valuable experience includes:
- Design and optimization of AAV vectors Production, purification, and characterization of AAVs Molecular cloning and construction of expression vectors Development of gene therapy-based strategies AAV and protein purification, for example using ÄKTA systems Sterile cell culture techniques and cultivation of various cell types
- Additional merit will be given for experience in:
- ELISA and flow cytometry/FACS In vivo experiments Neurodegenerative diseases Teaching
- We are looking for a curious, creative, and motivated individual with a strong interest in developing novel therapeutic strategies. You should be able to work independently, take initiative, and collaborate effectively with others. Great importance is placed on communication and teamwork skills, as well as a willingness to contribute to an open, supportive, and positive working environment within the research group.
