BHL Guide: Who Should Apply & How

Who is this job for?

This postdoc at Karolinska Institutet, Solna, is for a recent PhD in experimental vascular biology who wants to study how the endothelial barrier in white adipose tissue controls lipid handling in obesity. For researchers looking at postdoc jobs in Europe, it combines human in vitro models, mouse work and omics.

Eligibility at a glance

  • PhD (or equivalent foreign degree); a degree from the last three years is an advantage
  • Hands-on primary endothelial cell culture and transwell models
  • 3D adipose tissue spheroid models
  • In vivo mouse work, including i.v. tracing, GTT and ITT, and animal colony care
  • Excellent spoken and written English

How to apply

  • Apply online through the official Karolinska Institutet Varbi portal
  • Upload your PhD certificate, full CV, publication list and a one-page summary of current work
  • Last date: 17 Nov 2026 (written in the listing)

Tips for applicants from India

  • Keep your PhD certificate scanned and ready – it is a required document

Job Description

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
Are you curious why obesity leads to cardiometabolic disease, and want to contribute to elucidating the underlying disease mechanisms? We are a dynamic research group working translationally to understand how expansion of the human white adipose tissue leads to the emergence of cardiometabolic diseases, most notably dyslipidaemia and insulin resistance. As a part of a larger network of researchers in metabolism and cardiovascular inflammation, our lab aims to identify early molecular mechanisms driving disease initiation during obesity, with a particular focus on better understanding the source of adipose tissue dysfunction.
Your mission
The postdoctoral project will study the dynamics of the endothelial barrier in white adipose tissue and how it shapes adipose tissue lipid handling in health and disease. You will combine humanized in vitro models, made up of primary human microvascular endothelial cells or unilocular adipocyte spheroids, with functional in vivo mouse experiments. Omics analyses will complement these approaches, and the project will involve close collaboration with national and international partners, as well as colleagues in the lab working on adjoining projects.

Location: The position is located within the Department of Medicine, Solna. The department consists of ten divisions and each division consists of several research groups. The position is located within the research group headed by Associate Professor Carolina Hagberg in an international group consisting of 12 people, working as an integrated part of the larger Cardiovascular Theme that comprises around 100 persons active both in basic and translational research. Our lab is located in the brand-new research building BioClinicum at the heart of KI’s Solna campus, with close proximity to both the clinics at the Karolinska Hospital and the research resources of Karolinska Institutet. We are also affiliated to the Centre for Molecular Medicine (CMM) that offer an excellent variety of core facilities and researcher support.

Qualifications

  • Required qualifications:
  • Hands-on experience of culture and transwell-models using primary endothelial cells
  • 3D in vitro spheroids models of adipose tissue
  • Experience from in vivo mouse work, including i.v. tracing experiments in mice, and image-based analysis of tracer accumulation in organs, GTT and ITT.
  • The ability to plan, perform, analyse and document animal experiments as well as maintain animal colonies.
  • Excellent communication skills in both spoken and written English
  • Meriting qualifications:
  • The ability to work in a team and help out colleagues both experimentally and by discussing.
  • Omics analyses of transcriptomics data
  • To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

Skills Required

  • Scientific expertise and an ambitious, driving and problem-solving attitude with an attention to detail are highly valued.
