Job Description
The Nandakumar Lab (Dr. Satish Nandakumar, Department of Cell Biology and Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow in Blood Cancer Genetics and Genomics. The position is funded by an NIH R01.
The lab studies how inherited genetic variation shapes hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) function, clonal hematopoiesis and leukemia risk, combining human genetics, functional genomics, genome editing, primary human hematopoietic cells and genetically engineered mouse models.
Research opportunities:
1. Germline variants in clonal blood disorders – an NCI-supported project on how inherited variants promote expansion of JAK2V617F-carrying HSCs, and an NHLBI-supported project on inherited predisposition to clonal hematopoiesis, both using variant-to-function approaches for noncoding variants.
2. Functional genomics of noncoding regulatory variation – massively parallel reporter assays (MPRA), CRISPR screens and genome editing to test variants, map regulatory elements and link variants to target genes.
3. Statistical genetics and computational biology – GWAS analysis integrated with epigenomic and transcriptomic data, analysis of CRISPR-screen and MPRA data, and analysis of cohorts such as BeatAML for inherited modifiers of clonal hematopoiesis and myeloid malignancy.
Recent work from the lab (Blood Cancer Discovery, 2026) screened 1,374 noncoding variants across 51 CHIP-associated loci and identified 87 regulatory variants.
The lab offers regular one-on-one mentorship focused on science and career development, intellectual freedom to develop projects, and access to Einstein's shared flow cytometry, genomics and imaging facilities.
Key Responsibilities

- Help develop new research questions and apply for fellowships and career-development opportunities
Qualifications
- PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant field
- Training in hematopoiesis, stem cell biology, cancer biology, molecular biology, functional genomics, statistical genetics, genetic epidemiology, bioinformatics or a related area
- Strong publication record and ability to plan, execute, analyse and communicate rigorous research
- Self-motivated, thoughtful and collaborative
Skills Required
- Experimental: primary human HSPCs, genetic mouse models, CRISPR/Cas9, multicolour flow cytometry, tissue culture, molecular biology, genomics or transcriptomics
- Computational: GWAS, genetic epidemiology, large genomic or clinical datasets, statistical modelling, R or Python
